IOWA ICON: Pete Kuyper’s idea changed the future of his hometown.

On April 22, 2012 in Uncategorized

In Marion County, the name is everywhere. Outside Iowa, it means one thing.

We know it for its own icons, for the landmarks, and the landscape inside our borders, we know it by name.

Furniture for Small Rooms

On April 20, 2012 in Uncategorized

New York lofts, beach bungalows; or a townhouse in San Francisco, many living spaces are smaller than suburban homes. Regardless of the size of your place though, there is no reason to trade in style just because you have a small home. A decade ago when people were splurging on bigger homes, huge rooms and enormous pieces of furniture were in style. Now, furniture shoppers are demanding smaller sizes as people downsize, tire of excess, or retire to smaller homes.

A decade ago, if you needed small furniture you got small-scaled quality too. Years ago, the only smaller scaled furniture offered was the type of furniture college kids have in dorms. If you needed small furniture, it usually came in limited fabric choices too. There was nothing classy; nothing trendy was ever in small sized furniture. If you needed scaled back pieces, you were pretty much out-of-luck in the quality and style department.

Many furniture and home design and décor stores now have collections for small spaces. One prominent and popular upscale furniture maker has literally redesigned and scaled down part of their gorgeous furniture and accessory collection. Now, the person that could never have their furniture because of it being too big for their homes, has a whole new shopping experience awaiting them.

Typically, couches come in 6-8 foot lengths. Five-foot loveseats might be available, but good luck if you need a sofa in any other length. Now, you have many choices. More furniture makers are producing modular styles, where you can buy the seating arrangement you need; can place as many or as few together to get the desired length of seating you want. Dining tables are usually 6 or 8 foot long; sometimes you can find a 4-foot table, but typically, it will look like a “kitchen table” rather than a classy dining piece. Now, you have many more options available for smaller and narrower dining table options.

Depth is another new design aspect of furniture for small homes. A traditional sofa depth is around 37″. A deep sofa may be 42″. Now, you can order sofas with a 28″ depth, saving even more room for other furnishings or walking paths in your rooms.

You don’t have to spend hours on the Web looking for information about hot tubs davenport.

Get Creative and Go Green with Eco-Friendly Furniture

On March 09, 2012 in Uncategorized

Tree farms supply the demand for wood furniture, but trees take some years to grow, so new supply sources are continually being explored. Soon, wood will be at premium. Instead, buy furniture made of eco-friendly building materials are friendly to the environment. Some woods are easier to grow and reseed, but notice what you’re buying.

Packaging on furniture translates into excess plastics that end up in landfills, adding to the ecological problem. Green manufacturers cut down on packaging. Eco-friendly means using materials that are organic or are recyclable. Eco-friendly means less of a carbon footprint and that translates into fewer manufacturing processes. Eco-friendly furniture means that nothing about the piece takes away from or adds bad things to the environment. This means less lengthy deliveries too, where loads of carbon emissions cloud up the air.

Eco-friendly furniture is furniture that is made from handy materials. It is made from fast growing trees and plants like bamboo, so that supply sources aren’t diminished. It is furniture that is made from all the things that we’ve used and thrown away. Take a look at artisan works of tables made from tires, barn boards, recycled tiles and more. Eco-friendly furniture typically involves cleaner lines so that less is involved in manufacturing. Green furniture also means that little or no chemicals are added to treatments and finishes, making for a more pollutant and toxin free home.

Recycled cardboard is hip and trendy now; some designers are showing gallery-level pieces made of this cool material. When these chairs are completed, they look like suede. Who knew! Eco-friendly material such as recycled plastic that looks like wood is an inexpensive green solution to traditional woods. Recycled metals from shipping crates, railroads, manufacturing plants that have been closed, old fencing, old barn wood, recycled tires, recycled cardboard…all of these are just a few options when it comes to green furniture.

Check into eco-friendly furnishings. Locate dealers and artists by heading online. Search “green furniture” or “eco-friendly” furniture. Add your zip code to find local dealers, so you do your green-part by not adding emissions to the environment by driving around. Be creative. Make your own furniture using recycled materials in innovative ways. Check your local paper…someone’s old furniture could be exactly what you want and you’d be doing your part.
